Chico, Butte County
Chico State was founded in 1887 as a teachers' college on eight acres of cherry orchard donated by John Bidwell, the founder of the town. It is the second-oldest campus in the California State University system. Big Chico Creek runs through the brick campus, which sits beside downtown and gives the city much of its character.
